There was a time when the video chat in Star Trek was a far-fetched dream. Remember that time? Today, you speak to Alexa, to play you a song or tell you the weather. The newer technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Robotics seem too nerdy but it is unimaginable how they have penetrated our lives already – from a sentence closing suggestion, fraud detection in the financial systems, cars driving themselves, predicting your choices on Netflix, the facial recognition feature on your phone for heightened security, and more.
It doesn’t take rocket science to imagine that our lives will be thoroughly changed in the years to come … more so for our children. As per the US Department of Labor, almost 65% of children today will have jobs that haven’t been invented yet. Even the existing jobs will undergo a radical makeover.
Evolving Professions
Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare:
It is estimated that 80% of the jobs that doctors do right now, will be performed with the aid of wearable sensors, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. Of course, this will allow doctors to do what they do best – healing and innovating. As recent as April 2020, an AI app can detect coronavirus from the sound of a cough. The makers claim that it has about 70% accuracy. Whether or not this app comes to our rescue or not, the signs and direction that AI can take our lives are promising.
Virtual Reality Classrooms
We are living in times, where visual learning is already a critical part of any learning process. Virtual Reality classrooms aren’t far away in the future where VR applications will bring the curriculum to life. It can help students take a tour of the real-world work and industry scenarios to help learn better and equip them to face the challenges of the real world.
Future Workplaces
Futurists are also predicting future workspaces will have robots as coworkers. Many fear that robots will take away our jobs. While that is not true, a lot of what humans do especially the menial, routine jobs will certainly be taken over by robots. Upskilling is no more a choice. Learning how to work alognside robots is only a starting point to be relevant in the future workplace.
The Changing Job Scenario
Further, a McKinsey report suggests 75 million to 375 million may need to switch occupational categories and learn new skills. The job market has already been disrupted; professions such as Data Scientist, Cyber Security Specialist, Drone Manager, Blockchain Artchitect, Sustainability Manager, AI Developer and so on didn’t exist a decade now. Who knows what’s coming in the next ten years?
It is not coincidental that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently launched an AI Education website to help shape the future with the help of artificial intelligence. Educators are actively trying to make a STEM curriculum which is embedded with AI, Robotics, Coding and other computational skills. It’s where the future lies. Programming and coding are no longer IT skills but essential life skills. The above examples, only scratch the surface of what is possible in the future. In this rapidly changing and evolving employment scenario, it is critical to fully seize the opportunity by learning some of these newer technologies to empower ourselves so as to truly belong in the future.
The Road Ahead
Today’s parents are perpetually trying to equip their children to independece and self-sufficiency in a non-existent world. According to World Economic Forum, “The gap between the skills people learn and the skills people need is becoming more obvious, as traditional learning falls short of equipping students with the knowledge they need to thrive”. One study suggests that while students definitely need to learn the academic skills, the focus needs to also shift towards the 21st century skills where they master how to solve newer problems through critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration.
