Are you tired of this lockdown already?
Imagine the lockdown 50 years back! It would account for an elongated, prolonged, dragged out, indeterminable summer break, a broken economy, a hoard of social-emotional health issues, and more.
Thanks to today’s technologies, we are all occupied with work from home scenarios and learning continues. The adults and parents are occupied both with work, online learning, and on-demand entertainment on our fingertips. This is the reality today. Fast Forward 50 years, the shape of human life is inconceivable. To say that technology will fully take over humankind, and we could be working with robots and riding driverless cars is an understatement. We honestly can’t predict how it will be exactly, but there are some sure shot signs which predict better compatibility and chances of success.
An education in exponential technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data, Internet of Things, can prove to be a stepping stone to set them up for a life in the Information Age. But many myths and a lack of the potential of these technologies hinder an experience rich in these technologies. Let’s explore these myths so we can help the next generation be prepared for what life holds for them.
Myth 1. Technologies are a distraction
Fact: A Harvard Study cited that the skills required to succeed in the 21st century are not the core academic skills but the 4Cs – collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication. Experts suggest that a curriculum enriched in newer technologies can help hone these skills and more.
Myth 2. They just increase the screen time
Fact: It may or may not increase time but it will undoubtedly change screen time. Exposure to newer technologies takes children away from passive viewing and instead introduces them to create something, gain a creative approach to solving a problem, and collaborate to visualize solutions.
A 15-year-old boy in Indore named Kunal Chandiramani is the youngest entrepreneur in India. He built a learning platform with the help of web development skills and his own creativity which provides micro-courses for free and rewards for every course taken and eventually use the rewards to buy macro courses later. Doesn’t it sound exciting?
Myth 3. This is only for nerdy kids
Fact: Such skills develop a creative mindset and problem-solving skills which help children solve complex problems through varied and unique approaches.
A study by FICCI and NASSCOM with EY shows that 9% of the total workforce in India will be deployed in jobs related to exponential technologies that do not exist today. Also, 37% of the people will be deployed in tasks demanding changed skill sets in the coming 2-5 years.
Myth 4. Technical knowledge can’t compete with formal Education
Fact: The current employment sector requires different kinds of skill sets and overall abilities like communication skills, emotional intelligence, and team management from the employees, which can only be instilled through self-learning either online or offline.
However, the basic knowledge of reading, writing, basic mathematics, and science is essential for all, which should not be neglected.
Recently, an Engineer has made a 3D Ventilator during this time of the Covid-19 pandemic. Exposure to 3D printing helped him create this life-saving machine in such dire times.
Myth 5. These technologies can make the child tired or sluggish
Fact: How can a kid feel tired or sluggish when his mind is on fire? Exposure to these technologies would help children invent solutions to the world’s problems. Studies prove that technology is full of stimuli and requires the rapt attention of the kids, even while playing video games. It enhances their concentration and makes their mind more active than ever.
Myth 6. Formal Education is a must to get a job even in the field of technology
Fact: Bill Gates, who redefined the very definition of personal devices, was a school drop out. Not today, we need to go that route, but there is more than will be required to succeed in life, now, more than ever. The only mantra is to learn, apply, modify, forget, and relearn. The one who can do it will be offered a job even without a degree.
Myth 7. They are just a fad
Fact: Google CEO, Mr. Sundar Pichai, said that going forward, people will be offered jobs based on their experience in these. These technologies are not a passing trend; it is here to stay and change our lives forever.
Ace the world that is changing at 10x speed
By the time we realize that exposure to these technologies is life-critical, it might be too late for our kids to master it. An early experience helps establish newer skills as a lifestyle. It helps prepare the child for a world that is changing at 10x speed by honing skills such as critical thinking, decision making, problem-solving and more. Tomorrow’s world will be inhabited by robots and artificial intelligence devices. We, as parents and educators, need to equip and empower today’s kids to acquire next-generation life skills – programming and coding to make sure our children can find themselves relevant in the workspace.
